5 minutes down — keep going?

Purpose

To land in a confined area.

Objective

  • High reconnaissance at 500' AGL.
  • Low reconnaissance.

Performance standards

High recon airspeed: ±10 KIAS.
High Reconnaissance
  • 500' AGL.
  • 500' horizontal distance.
  • 65 knots.
  • Circle to the right due to the right seat.
  • Maintain a constant distance from the target.
Low Reconnaissance
  • Make the decision before ETL: continue the approach or go around.
  • Confined: a steep approach and a maximum performance takeoff.
The Sequence
1High reconnaissance
2Cross check
3Start approach
4Low reconnaissance
DOWNWINDBASEFINAL

Fly downwind, base, and final to the target.

Wind
  • If wind is calm, avoid obstructions.
  • If wind, land into the wind or at crosswind, but avoid a tail wind.
  • No steeper approach than needed to clear obstacles.

Common errors

  • Failing to perform a proper high or low reconnaissance.
  • Approach angle too steep or too shallow for conditions.
  • Failing to consider emergency landing areas.
  • Failure to select a specific landing spot.
  • Failing to consider wind and turbulence effect.
  • Improper takeoff and climb technique for conditions.
  • Failure to maintain safe clearance distance from obstructions.
