Purpose

To abort a landing if:

  • Instructed by ATC.
  • Traffic congestion.
  • Discomfort.
  • Potential danger.
  • Abandon approach.

Objectives

  • Increase airspeed.
  • Climb back to pattern altitude.

Performance standards

  • Increase to 65 KIAS.
  • Climb to within ±50' of pattern altitude.
The Profile
1Go around — before ETL
  • Up collective to Takeoff Power.
  • Left pedal for trim.
  • Forward cyclic to 53 to 60 KIAS.
2Communicate
  • Announce or get clearance.
H: "6JJ going around."
T: "6JJ, make right closed traffic, North Pad cleared to land."
H: "Cleared to land North Pad, 6JJ."

Common errors

  • Failure to increase power to takeoff power.
  • Failure to maintain heading with pedals.
  • Aborting after loss of ETL.
  • Abrupt control movements.
