SHALLOW APPROACH & RUNNING LANDING

6JJ · Maneuver Study Card
5:00
5 minutes down — keep going?

Purpose

A maneuver for high density altitude, to avoid:

  • LTE.
  • SWP.
  • Low Rotor RPM.

Objectives

  • Touchdown at or just above ETL.
  • Level touchdown.

Performance standards

  • Heading & track ±10°.
KEY: Maintain ETL.
Approach Pattern
500' AGL65 kts
400' AGL60 kts
250' AGL· base to final
The Profile
1500' AGL — straight & level
2400' AGL — downwind to base
3250' AGL — base to final
4At ETL (~20 kts) — touchdown
  • Forward cyclic to level attitude to touchdown.
  • 1/4 inch up collective to touch down gently.

After touchdown

  • Left cyclic for straight track.
  • Pedals for straight heading.
  • Lower collective gently to brake — not aft cyclic.

On final

Must see red over white on the VASI.

The approach-angle marking on the card is hard to read (looks like 5°); confirm with your CFI.

Common errors

  • Touchdown slower than ETL.
  • Aft cyclic and touchdown on heels.
  • Not enough left cyclic to maintain track.
  • Insufficient pedals.
