Every initial call, same order:
"Torrance Ground, Helicopter Seven Zero Six Juliet Juliet, west ramp, information [X], request southeast departure."
ATIS/info only on first contact with a facility. After they answer with your callsign, abbreviate to "Six Juliet Juliet."
| Don't say | Why |
|---|---|
| "This is…" | Amateur tell. Your callsign is implied. |
| "…with you" / "checking in" | Filler. Just state position + request. |
| "Any traffic please advise" | Discouraged (AIM). Just report your position. |
| "Over and out" | Contradiction. Use neither on ATC. |
| "Repeat" | Use "Say again." ("Repeat" = artillery.) |
| "Roger" for a clearance | Roger ≠ yes. Read back the actual instruction. |
AIM 4-2-1(c): jargon, chatter, and CB slang have no place on ATC frequencies.
Repeat the instruction, your callsign last. Always read back: hold-short, runway assignments, altitudes, headings, frequency changes you're unsure of.
ATC: "Six Juliet Juliet, enter left downwind runway two niner right, report midfield."
You: "Left downwind two niner right, report midfield, Six Juliet Juliet."
AIM 4-3-17 — helicopters get tailored handling at towered fields.
